Flash Fiction "Help"

Newest Flash Fiction: By Kendrick Barnes

Help
It was like any other Friday night; I leaned over and turned the late night soap operas on the soapnet channel. I prepared one of my favorite meals for the kids; they loved my lasagna with garlic bread. The kids and I had lain on the chair for so long until we fell asleep. Little Tommy woke up crying because he did not have his favorite blanket beside him. I got up and then tucked both children into their beds. Next, I went to the window, the view of the city was extremely pretty. I saw all the flashing lights and the cars. Living on a third floor in an apartment is a great place to be because the view is perfect. The cars down below looked like busy fireflies flying around on a summer night. I was smoking a cigarette, and I noticed that the neighbor in another complex had turned on her light, and I saw her panicking and trembling as she dialed a number. Immediately afterwards, I saw a person come from behind her in a black ski mask. He was wearing a black long-sleeve shirt and black gloves. I saw the masked person knock the lady out with a glass bottle. The woman jumped up and the masked person strangled her with the phone cord. I had dropped my cigarette, and  burned my arm before it finally landed my feet.  Not caring if  I stepped on, over, or across it, I ran to dial 9-1-1 on the phone. I heard “Hello 911 What is your emergency.” I could not speak the words could not come out hard as I tried. I thought to myself I am a silenced witness. As I looked down I saw a homeless man who signled me to come down and help him.
